BEST FRIENDS
As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine's head. "Whose son are you, young man?" Saul asked him. David said, "I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem." After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father's house. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.
1 Samuel 17:57-18:3
One of the most notorious odd couples of the Bible is Jonathan and David. Jonathan is the prince, next in line to the throne. But Jonathan's shot at the throne gets upstaged by an unlikely shepherd boy named David, who is handpicked by God to be the next king. The natural relationship between the two should have been sworn enemies, yet they ended up being the most intimate picture of friendship in the Bible.
Their relationship lasted because they were committed to having a quality friendship. Even though King Saul, Jonathan's father, was out for David's blood, Jonathan stayed committed to David. David knew Jonathan's descendants would pose a constant threat to him when he became king, yet David committed to take care of them on behalf of Jonathan.
David and Jonathan proved to be faithful to each other. They had each other's back in the face of extreme danger and unlikely circumstances. And they constantly encouraged each other through all the hard times. God wants us to develop friendships just like David and Jonathan. He wants us to have people that we can be accountable to and trust that they will be faithful to us.
The most unlikely people in our lives can turn out to be the best friends in the world. Don't let differences keep you from developing quality relationships with others. Get to know a different variety of people, and let God work the chemistry to bring you together.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, I realize that the best relationships can come from the most unlikely circumstances. Help me to be open to a wide variety of friendships and trust you to develop those relationships as you see fit. In Jesus' name. Amen
